River Cruise Demand Continues to Rise

By Sam Mayo, General Manager, Williamsburg Realty

Travelers are seeing the world in increasing numbers.  And they’re doing it by boat – river cruises to be more precise. River cruising has become increasingly popular among those who want to explore new destinations, relax in luxury, and vacation like none other.

Especially popular in Europe, river cruising consists of many activities including dining, cruising, and various modes of touring. It provides relaxing or active itineraries that are immersive, and an all-around pleasant form of travel that allows vacationers to enjoy ever-changing scenery, whether they’re gliding along the waters of the Rhine or stateside along the storied Mississippi River.

In the past decade, river cruising has emerged as a favorite travel trend, according to Allyson deHaven Harris, co-owner of The Travel Corner, voted the Best Travel Agency in Williamsburg for the last 13 years. Coastal Virginia has also named The Travel Corner as the Top Travel Agency on the Virginia Peninsula.

“River Cruising has become more and more popular with our clients over the last 10 years,” says Harris.  With large and varied staterooms, they have become one of the most popular modes of travel.

“River cruising allows you to dock in the middle a major city like Paris, walk down the gangway and walk to the Eiffel Tower in a matter of minutes.  You can also enjoy the wonderful scenery and quaint towns and villages along the river,” she adds, noting that folks in the Williamsburg area sure love to travel.

Business has been “amazing” says Harris.  “People are feeling good about traveling, and there are so many wonderful places to see and experience, with attractive rates to fit most budgets.”

River cruising is different from ocean cruising.  Ships are smaller, more intimate.  The number of passengers can be a few as 120 to 200.  Ocean cruise ships tend to be much larger with much greater populations, but they do have their advantages with multiple entertainment venues as well as port of calls. The mid-size ships are a great fit for those who prefer the best of both worlds.

“Cruising is a great experience, with something available for every taste and activity level,” Harris goes on to say, adding that the industry is building more ships to accommodate demand. “Expect to be WOWED whether you travel on the ocean or take a cruise up the rivers of the world.”
