Be Aware of Speed Cameras on I-64

If you’re driving I-64 between Williamsburg and Richmond, be aware that speed-enforcement cameras are being used in some of the I-64 construction zones. The cameras are primarily associated with the I-64 widening project between the Williamsburg area and New Kent County. The construction corridor generally extends between Exit 234 (Lightfoot/Route 199) and Providence Forge in New Kent.

In the James City County portion, there is currently a warning period. Actual enforcement is scheduled to begin September 13, 2026. How fast can you go? The important rule is: You can receive a camera violation for going over the posted work-zone speed limit. The penalty can be up to $100.

The cameras are intended for active highway work zones. The speed limit on this section of I-64 can change on the electronic signs depending on construction activity and conditions. The bottom line is that when driving I-64 from Williamsburg toward Richmond, pay particular attention to the electronic speed-limit signs between Lightfoot and New Kent.
